Overview

Protecting a homeowner’s air conditioning unit is an important part of preparing a roofing jobsite. Falling shingles, nails, wood, and other roofing debris can damage an AC unit, while covering the unit with plywood or a tarp can restrict airflow and prevent it from operating safely. At Trust Roofing, we use a breathable AC protection system that creates a barrier around the unit without blocking airflow. This allows the homeowner to continue running their air conditioning during the roofing project while helping protect the equipment from debris.

Our Field Standards

Trust Roofing expects AC units within the work area to be properly protected before roofing work begins. Crew members should:

  • Use the designated AC cover system rather than placing plywood, tarps, or other solid materials directly over the unit.
  • Center the AC unit beneath the protective frame.
  • Adjust the telescoping poles so the frame provides adequate clearance above and around the unit.
  • Secure the protective netting to the frame before roofing work begins.
  • Make sure the netting does not interfere with the operation or airflow of the AC unit.
  • Inspect the area and AC unit when removing the protection at the end of the job.
  • Break down the system and return all components to the storage bag for the next project.

Our Process

1. Position the Frame
Set up the AC protection frame around the unit, positioning the air conditioner as close to the center of the frame as possible.

2. Adjust the Height
Extend or lower the telescoping poles based on the height of the AC unit. The frame should provide enough clearance for the protective netting to remain above the equipment.

3. Install the Netting
Place the breathable protective net over the completed frame. Use the openings in the netting and the designated handles or attachment points to secure it properly.

4. Check the Protection
Before roofing work begins, confirm that the unit is protected from falling debris and that nothing is resting directly on the AC. The breathable netting should allow the unit to continue operating normally.

5. Remove and Store
When protection is no longer needed, remove the netting, collapse the telescoping poles, disassemble the frame, and return all components to the storage bag. The complete system should be returned to the trailer so it is ready for the next job.
