3.12 How to Install a Solar Attic Fan

How to cut the roof opening, flash, and install a solar-powered attic fan correctly so it improves attic ventilation without creating a leak point.

Roofing work involves working at height and requires proper safety equipment and training. The information in this course is intended for educational purposes. Homeowners should consult a licensed roofing professional before attempting roof repairs or modifications.

Overview

A solar attic fan actively exhausts hot attic air using a solar-powered motor, reducing attic temperatures and extending the life of roofing materials in Florida's extreme heat. Unlike ridge vents, solar attic fans provide powered ventilation and are particularly effective in attics with limited soffit ventilation. At Trust Roofing, installing a solar attic fan correctly requires cutting the opening precisely, flashing properly, and confirming the unit operates before sign-off.

Our Field Standards

Solar attic fan installation follows Trust Roofing field standards.

Field standards include:
* The opening location is confirmed with the project manager before cutting
* The opening is cut between rafters — never through a rafter
* The flashing is integrated correctly with surrounding shingles — lower shingles under the flange, upper shingles over it
* All gaps around the unit are sealed with roofing cement or the provided sealant
* The solar panel is oriented for maximum sun exposure — typically south-facing
* Completed installation is tested and confirmed operational before project sign-off

Our Process

Planning the Installation

* Confirm the installation location with the project manager
* Check from the attic — confirm the location is between rafters and away from obstructions
* Confirm the solar panel orientation will allow maximum sun exposure

Cutting the Opening

1. Mark the cutout dimensions on the roof surface
2. Cut through the shingles and deck using a jig saw or reciprocating saw
3. Keep cuts clean and square
4. Check the attic opening for obstructions

Flashing the Fan

1. Slide the fan base flange under the upper shingles and over the lower shingles
2. Apply roofing cement under the upper flange where it goes under the shingles
3. Fasten the flange into the deck
4. Seal all edges of the base flange with roofing cement

Installing the Fan Unit

* Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting the motor to the base
* Connect the solar panel lead to the fan motor
* Position the solar panel for maximum sun exposure
* Confirm the fan operates correctly before finishing

Roofing Terms

Solar Attic Fan

A powered roof ventilation unit that uses a solar panel to run a motor actively exhausting hot attic air, more effective than passive ventilation in attics with limited soffit intake, and common on Tampa Bay homes.

Attic Ventilation

The movement of air through the attic space to regulate temperature and moisture, critical in Florida’s climate for extending shingle life, preventing moisture damage, and reducing cooling loads.

Roof Penetration Flashing

The metal or TPO flashing component installed around any object that passes through the roof surface, must be correctly integrated with the surrounding shingles to prevent water intrusion at the penetration point.

Florida Solar Panel and Fan Installation Code

Florida building code requires that all roof penetrations, including solar attic fans, be properly flashed and sealed, inspectors verify that the flashing is correctly integrated with surrounding shingles, not just caulked.

Flashing Integration

The correct process of weaving a penetration flashing base into the surrounding shingle courses, lower shingles under the flange, upper shingles over it, creating a waterproof overlap that sheds water away from the penetration.
